A
blade iron, also commonly referred to as a "muscleback" or MB iron, is a traditional golf iron that is usually forged from a single solid piece of soft carbon steel. The majority of the clubhead mass in a blade iron tends to be evenly distributed across the lower half of the club. Blades are typically more compact in size and feature thinner soles and toplines than cast, "cavity back" designs. Skilled ball strikers often favor blades as they offer a high degree of workability - the ability to curve shots and alter trajectory. However, blades are far less forgiving on off-center hits than iron models with a high degree of perimeter weighting.
