Last year I purchased 710 AP2 with Project X 5.5 shafts. I am more than satisfied with the clubs, but I have lost about a 1/2 to full club. Additionally, in windy conditions, the ball seems to balloon with significant loss of distance into the wind and goes forever downwind. I believe it is the combination of both club head and shaft that gets the ball so high in the air. I had played TT S300 shafts for years. I believe I will go back to them. But I am having difficulty choosing between the AP2 and CB. I really like the feel of the AP2, but I think the boring flight of the CBs may be better for me. So, I am wondering if there "significant" difference in the feel and forgiveness between the AP2 and CB. I strike the ball decent. My misses are normally closer to the heel. If anyone has any information they can share, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

    MG,

The AP2's do offer a higher launch and more spin compared to the CB's due to a bigger chassis and lower CG. However, they are much more forgiving on mishits on the face as well as turf interaction with a wider sole.  If your a consistent ball striker and do not mishit the ball very much then CB's will give you an advantage on controlling the spin and trajectory of your shots, especially into the wind.  However, if you strike the ball inconsistently, then I would stick to the AP2's.

For myself, I had the same problem playing in windy conditions.  I'm a high spin, high launch player and I struggled hitting the AP2's into the wind (balooning) and couldn't control the distances downwind as well.  So the CB's work best for my game.

My suggestion is go to a local fitter and hit the new CB 712 and see if you like the feel and ballflight compared to the AP2's then decide which is best for your game.

    Best of Luck!

Thanks for the reply Gator. I am probably my own worse critic. I strike the ball pretty decent and pretty straight. So, I am probably a better ball striker than I want to give myself credit. I hit the CB, MBand AP2 yesterday. They all felt great. But I had to give the edge to the CB and MB. It was indoors because of the weather. But I am definitely leaning towards the CBs versus the AP2. Thanks for your assistance. PS: Looking forward to another great Ravens/Steelers game!

    MG,

Glad you got to test out the new 712 series of irons. I just got my 712 CB's a couple weeks ago and love them.  New satin finish is pretty sweet.  Ya, Ravens/Steelers playoff game should be a nailbiter as usual.

  5. I'm looking to buy a new set of irons very soon. My last 2 sets have been 680s, which are low trajectory mb's. They also have TT x100's. I just started playing for a college team and the coach says I should get AP2s with S300s. My clubhead speed is about 110. I am scratch and like to work the ball alot. I have similar concerns as MG, I think I might just hit it too high. Are the CBs a happy medium between the MBs and AP2s? I want to get the best edge I can get with this new set. A large part of me thinks I should go with the best technology. I hear the dramatic increase in workability of blades is mantra. My coach says a player can keep an AP2 3 iron just as low as an MB 3 iron with a little more forward press. What do you think I should do?

  6. I am making the same switch. I've had AP2's for four years now and they've been great. However my swing speed has steadily increased in the last two years and they hang in the air a little more than i would prefer now. I'm taking a lead of faith and ordering CB's. I'm a little nervous, never played a blade before but I hit them fine on the range. Driver swing speed is around 123 so I'm hoping the slightly stiffer shaft and thinner iron will get me a more "wind friendly" trajectory. However I may keep the AP 3 iron, it's become my go to club on short par 4's.

I couldn't decide either so I bought a set of each. Had a bonus and decided to get both and build a mixed set or sell one or the other. Both have PX 5.5 that work the best for me on the launch monitor. I'm between a 5 and a 10 hcp usually closer to 10. Hit my 7 150. My 6 iron club speed is about 80 and the ball speed 105-110 Got the 712 AP 2's first. The short irons are the most improved in the AP2's. Great irons. Got the 712 CB 's 3 days ago . Took them to the range thinking I would hit them a few times but probably keep the AP's . I was amazed how much I loved the CB's. Took them on the course and shot 78. They were longer than the AP2's too , a club longer. I checked the lie lofts. The AP2's were one degree weak and the CB's one strong . I usually carry a 5 iron as my longest iron and hit 3,4 hybrids. Yesterday was my 3rd round with the CB's and I broke out the 4 iron . I flushed it several times. Seemed easier to hit than even than the 5 . I pulled the shafts last night spined the shafts can't wait to hit them today. Maybe I'll even try the 3 iron. Can't remember the last time I attempted to hit a 3 iron. I would ignore what everyone says including me about which are better for you . Club fitting is as much an art as science. They need to work for you. Go to a Titleist fitter. Use the monitor but take a few clubs on the course and hit them . Maybe it's the sole/ turf interaction that is the difference for me. I hit the CB's better even the long irons. Go figure!
