Hey everybody, I've been thinking about getting a 712U 3-iron to replace my 712 AP2 3-iron. I was wondering, how they have been working for you guys and if you think it would fit my game. I hit my current 3-iron about 215-225, my swing speed with a driver is about 110 and I have a medium-high ball flight. How much distance would I get with the 712U and how easy are they to hit from the fairway? Thanks.

I too am curious if anyone out there with the 712U has played enough with it to provide feedback.  It was great getting to hit it in Austin, and I'm sure it could fill a need in my bag.  But what are the reviews on them after the new wears off.

When I ordered by 714's last fall I ordered both a AP2 4-Iron and a 712u 4-iron to compare them.  Over the winter I have kept both in my bag to contrast and compare to see which club will ultimately make the cut.  In spire of the cold weather, I think I have enough rounds under the belt to have an opinion.  As a point of reference, I normally play the 4-Iron to about 205 yards.

My unscientific analysis is I like both clubs, but in different situations.  When I am using the club off the tee onto a longer par 3 or a shorter Par 4 where I need to keep it tight, I really like the feel and performance of the 712u.  This club is an excellent driving iron for me.  When I am striking the ball from the turf, I prefer the feel and performance of the 714 AP2.  I tend to hit down through the ball and it seems like the weight and distribution in the AP2 feel better on these shots.  The AP2 also felt better when I had to keep the ball low but carry or make punch shots when I found my self under trees, etc.

Seeing that I use the 4 iron more off the tee than on the tee, the AP2 is the 4-iron that is remaining in the bag.  I like both, but I think you really have to play with them to see what fits your game the best.  I can easily see why somebody playing he CB or MB would use a 712u, but when you compare the heads on the 712u to the AP2 they are very similar with a little different weight distribution.

    Hey Steve-

I purchased the 712U 2 iron last year and could not be happier.  I hit a few of the other driving irons on the market and I hit the 712 the best and the look of the club is unmatched.  I replaced the 18 degree hybrid in my bag and feel distance is similar (220 ish), but I am in the woods less often.  I went with the Project X shaft, but there are a bunch of custom options depending on desired ball flight.  My home course is relatively short so this club has been ideal off the tee and on second shots into par 5's for me.  I have hit the 712U 3 and 4 irons as well and in my opinion are easy to hit.  I play blades and am looking to pull my current 4 iron in the bag and replace with the 712U 4 iron to get some more forgiveness in the bag.  Definitely recommend 712U.  Good luck!

I can vouch that Googs absolutely crushes his 2 iron, not only off the tee, but off the deck.  I've seen him go 2 iron, 2 iron onto the Par 5.  It's lethal.

I had the 712U 3-Iron in my bag for the majority of last season.  Off the tee it was great but I was having trouble keeping it down.  Towards the end of last season I got fitted for the 714 AP2 with C-Taper 130X shafts and had that put on the 712U as well.  The shaft has made all the difference in the world.  I will most likely be removing my 19 degree hybrid from the bag because of the distance and accuracy of the 712U.

    Highly recommended.

I have the 712U's 3 and 4.  I mixed them with my 714 CB's.  They are different feeling from a regular iron for sure.  after about 2 months i have starting to learn how to "dance" with them.  Off a tee they are great... at first i struggled a little on tight lies at first, but truly love them.  I went with TTXP95 shafts on them and love the high ball flight I am getting.
